Despite their durability, flanges tend to leak over time. This is because they require a gasket and possibly glue to achieve the required seal, and these can deteriorate due to simple wear and tear. When this happens, it is necessary to remove the flange and replace the gasket, which is not a simple task.

The flange is held in place by several nuts, bolts and washers, which may be difficult to remove since it's often necessary to use both hands in a confined space. Once you've got them out and removed the flange, you have to clean it thoroughly to remove dirt that may prevent a proper seal and cause a leak.

You also need to ensure the nuts and bolts are in a good condition before re-using them, have to fit a new gasket to seal between the flanges and may have to apply glue, which can be messy. Re-fitting the flange may not be simple, with the need to properly re-tighten bolts in a limited space where working is difficult.

The band can be positioned so the nut is easy to access and tighten, making it a much easier task to clamp it than for a flange.

V-bands are much more compact than flanges and so are more convenient for areas that are tight for space. Gaskets and glue aren't needed so the clamps can be easily removed and re-installed many times over without damage.
